Gravel

by Paul
(London U.K.)

I have been singing, untrained, all my life. I am now 65 and still singing, but struggling to get used to the 'gravel' that has developed in my voice. It is caused by mucous that is a result of reflux caused by a herniated esophogeal valve. It's very annoying. I try drinking a lot more fluid. I also find it does help to drink warm liquid with a bit of honey.

When I'm performing, I usually take a thermos with warm water with a little honey and apple juice. It would probably be better to just have warm water, but I like a little sweetener just for taste. Some people say the honey smooths the chords.

It does help my singing performance, but the 'gravel' is always there, even in my talking voice. I've been told not to clear my throat, but it's so hard when there is always this mucous that is 'demanding' to be cleared.

A speech therapist said if I have to clear it, to cough like an old person ! and end the cough with a hummmm so that it doesn't shock the vocal chords too much.
