Most of us don't have too much trouble singing in our lower range but as soon as we get into our high mix, our voice starts breaking apart and our muscles starts working harder than it really should. Some of you who may know what resonance is, or the facial buzzes (from the sinuses to the head), may already know where to place the mask when singing in chest. But where does should the resonance be placed in our higher register? It goes into the head and it may not always be there even when we try our very best to relax. Here is the best way you could ever find the mix without having to go through an operatic or chesty sound and anything worse. Place the passage of your air to that passage way from behind the soft palate going up to the head. It's hard to explain with words but with a diagram, it'd be much easier to see. Don't expect the voice to do it on it's own. You have to control it, you have to make it there especially for those of us who are not natural singers. Also, for the MOST important part of singing, you must learn to sing with your regular speaking tone, "consistently."
Remember, high notes are not like what we know of as reaching high over the shelf for something. Also, remember that you must must MUST learn how to sing with your speaking tone into your high notes. Don't forget to cool the voice off by reading an article or anything that will get you to be in your speaking voice. You may heard of it but "hoots" and "hums" may help very little or not at all. So speaking voice is truly the key. Good luck.
