Yes those are some ways to keep the tongue down but for people of native tongues like me, it doesn't always work. So, what I do is loosen up my jaw first (and if it feels very clamped, I smile really big for a minute or less to soften the back jaw muscles), then play dead with my tongue so that it won't lift up so much. You could also sing your sing with "wah." The reason why it's better with the "w" is that it helps keep your lip relaxed. Even your lips has to be relaxed! Never try to purse the lips, this means that you're haven't loosened up and to loosen the tongue, your whole entire mouth needs to be very calm.
To be honest, I don't really like to use the word "relax" a lot because when we think of being "relax" we kind of sing with almost no effort and end up sounding really weak. I like to say "flexible" and "expandable." Try to let your jaw be flexible so that the tongue can stay down.
