"Vibrato Singing Tips For An Effortless Vibrato"

On this page you will find some helpful vibrato singing tips to get your vibrato going.

Contrary to popular belief, anyone can learn to develop a stylish, vibrato that can be turned on and off as you please.

You may have had a singing teacher tell you that “you either have it or you don’t”. This simply isn’t true. I know because I was one of those singers that was told it just wasn’t possible for me to develop a smooth vibrato.

In a few moments, I’m going to prove to you that you can develop an effortless vibrato. There are a few simple vibrato singing tips that will allow anyone to experience vibrato for themselves immediately.

But first, I want to tell you a reason why it’s important to develop your vibrato.

The reason is: when your vibrato is flowing, it means that your voice is functioning well and correctly. That’s right… if your vibrato is flowing it’s a sign that you have good vocal technique.

Now, what’s happening when your vibrato is flowing?

Well it’s quite simple. Vibrato is just your voice fluttering from one pitch to another, and back again. This happens at such a speed that it sounds like a fast wobble.

So let’s say that you’re singing a middle C. To do vibrato on this note, your voice could go up to C# then back down to C, back up to C#, back down to C etc…

Vibrato is simply an oscillation between two pitches.

A good vibrato oscillates at around six cycles per second. If you can oscillate between two notes at this rate, your vibrato will sound classy and impressive!

Let’s Now Do An Exercise

Now, as I promised earlier, here’s a simple vibrato singing tip to give you a taste of vibrato!

Here’s what you need to do.

Place both hands on your tummy, just above your belly button and just below your ribcage.

Got it? Good.

Now, sing a note in the middle of your range. Choose a note that you’re very comfortable with. Any note will do.

The next step is to sing this note, and sustain it for as long as you can. As you sustain this note, use your hands to push in gently, then release, and then push in again…By pumping your hands gently in and out just above your belly button, you will notice that without even trying, you are producing vibrato!

Now, this is an exaggerated version of vibrato. It’s not a finished sound. It’s just a tool to get you to taste vibrato.

The key to learning to get vibrato (with no help from your hands!) is to discover how to oscillate the air pressure being sent to your vocal chords. With the above vibrato singing tip, your hands and the “pumping action” provided the oscillating air pressure, but there are some very elegant exercises that can train you to do the same without the use of your hands.

A very simple way to begin exploring vibrato is to simply oscillate between two pitches slowly, and then gradually speed things up.

If you began at two cycles per second (which is fairly easy) and then after a week, sped this up and practiced three cycles a second, and so on…

Within a month you’d have your vibrato spinning at six cycles a second, and you’d have the ability to turn it on and off as you please!

There are however, exercises that can get this same results much faster. In the Singing Success program on the 5th CD, you begin some powerful exercises that can get your vibrato flowing almost immediately. As a singer who always used to struggle with vibrato, you can’t imagine my amazement when my vibrato began effortlessly pouring out after a simple 10 minute vibrato singing tip!
